On April 28th, 29th paramedics from CALS joined several other providers in the K9 world to take part in an inter-agency training. The training was provided by VTG (Veterinary Tactical Group) a world renowned K9 care provider. CALS started this partnership with the Calvert County Sheriffs Office approximately 5 years ago to create a learning environment that benefitted both CALS medics and Calvert Sheriffs Office K9 handlers. Since then CALS and the Sheriffs office has grown this course offering into a truly regional training. This year the following agencies were able to attend.
CALS Calvert Co EMS Calvert Co Animal Control Calvert Co Sheriffs Office K9 St-Mary's Co Sheriffs Office K9 Anne Arundel Co PD K9 Charles Co DES Johns Hopkins Tactical Medicine Program Physician
Providers were given a full two day intensive course on critical emergency care to stabilize working K9's and then transporting them to appropriate level of care for the injuries they have received. Providers were exposed to both medical and traumatic scenarios in dealing with K9's. Thanks to the work of the Calvert Co Office of Fire & Rescue we were able to cover the entire course cost with the Miemss ALS training grant.

Thank you VTG, Calvert County, and MIEMSS! This was a great course with first-rate instructors and I recommend it highly to any EMS clinician who has an opportunity to take it!
